Legal Basis

Why Lok Adalat is the right way.

Lok Adalat settlements are not fines paid on the street. They are court-sanctioned resolutions — legal, permanent, and formal. Established under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, Lok Adalat is one of India's oldest alternative dispute resolution mechanisms.

Legally final

A Lok Adalat award is a decree of the court. It is final and binding on all parties. No appeal lies before any court. The settled challan cannot be reopened or challenged — ever.

Section 21, Legal Services Authorities Act 1987

Court records updated

The Lok Adalat award is entered into official court records. Your challan is marked permanently closed in the eCourts system. It will not appear in RC renewal checks, fitness certificate applications, or any future verification.

eCourts platform — Ministry of Law & Justice

No criminal record

A challan settled through Lok Adalat does not appear as a pending criminal violation. Your driving licence history is clean. No court summons, no pending warrant, no future legal exposure for the same offence.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

Everything you need to know before you start.

Lok Adalat (People's Court) is a formal part of India's judicial system, established under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987. It is a court-sanctioned dispute resolution mechanism where pending cases are settled by mutual agreement before trained conciliators. Settlements made via Lok Adalat are final, legally binding, and cannot be challenged in any higher court. It is completely legal, actively encouraged by the government, and free of court fees.
Lok Adalat settlement works for most traffic violations under the Motor Vehicles Act — speeding, lane violations, no-helmet, no-seatbelt, overloading, expired insurance, and similar compoundable offences. Challans involving serious criminal offences (drunk driving causing injury, hit-and-run with fatality, reckless driving resulting in death) may not be eligible for Lok Adalat. VirtualVakil's AI will identify which of your challans are eligible before you proceed.
No documents are needed upfront. Just send your vehicle registration number (e.g., DL8CAB1234) on WhatsApp — VirtualVakil fetches all pending challans from government eCourt databases automatically. At the filing stage, VirtualVakil may ask for your name as it appears on the RC and your driving licence number. No physical documents need to be submitted or mailed.
Challan lookup and case review takes 30–60 seconds. Payment can be completed in minutes. VirtualVakil files your case before the next Lok Adalat session — which is typically held on the last Saturday of each month. Once filed, you can expect your challan to be settled within 2–4 weeks. VirtualVakil notifies you on WhatsApp as soon as the settlement is complete.
VirtualVakil covers 22 states and runs automatic cross-state searches. If your vehicle is registered in Delhi, we also query databases in Haryana, UP, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and Chandigarh. If registered in Maharashtra, we check Gujarat, Karnataka, and Madhya Pradesh as well. Just send your vehicle number and VirtualVakil will check all applicable states automatically — no need to specify.
Yes. Payment is processed via WhatsApp Pay (powered by Meta's payment infrastructure and regulated by the RBI) or a secure payment link using industry-standard TLS encryption and Razorpay's PCI-DSS compliant gateway. VirtualVakil does not store card or UPI details. The ₹500 service fee is charged only after you review and confirm your challan details — you are never charged without consent.
In the rare case where a Lok Adalat does not approve the settlement (less than 5% of cases — typically due to the offence being non-compoundable), VirtualVakil will notify you and refile at the next available session at no additional service fee. If the challan is ultimately ineligible for Lok Adalat settlement, VirtualVakil processes a full refund of the ₹500 service fee per our refund policy.
No. The entire process happens on WhatsApp. You do not need to visit any court, RTO, traffic police station, or VirtualVakil's office. VirtualVakil manages the Lok Adalat filing on your behalf. You receive a digital settlement receipt on WhatsApp once the case is officially closed. The receipt is court-issued and legally valid.
