Cyber crime investigation by advocates and cyber experts, as one team.

Reviewed by the VirtualVakil legal team · Last reviewed:

SHORT ANSWER

The VirtualVakil legal team investigates online fraud, hacked accounts, impersonation, data theft and other complex cyber crime for individuals and businesses, with advocates and cyber experts working the same case from Delhi and Noida. We work only with public-source information and evidence you are entitled to give us: we preserve it so it holds up in court, trace what can lawfully be traced, and turn it into a complaint, a court application or a request that the police, your bank or the platform can act on. We never hack back or get into anyone's account, and no honest investigator can promise to name the person behind a crime or to recover money.

Why one team

A cyber and legal response team for modern and complex crimes

Most cyber crime now crosses a phone, a bank, a platform and a police station. A lawyer without technical evidence cannot move the case; a technical report without the legal route goes nowhere. We put both on one file from the first day.

For individuals

  • Large or repeated online, UPI or card fraud
  • Investment, trading and task scams
  • Hacked WhatsApp, Instagram or email used against you
  • Fake or impersonating profiles, trolling and harassment
  • Morphed photos, sextortion and leaked private images
  • Spyware or stalkerware on your phone
  • Crypto transfers to a scam platform

For businesses

  • Business email compromise and invoice fraud
  • Data theft by an employee, ex-employee or vendor
  • Fake profiles, apps or websites using your brand
  • Defamatory or anonymous posts about the business
  • Account takeover of company email or social media
  • Insider fraud with a digital trail
  • Evidence for a civil suit, an arbitration or an FIR

A live ransomware attack, data breach or company account takeover needs incident response first: cyber incident response for businesses. Trying to find out who runs a fake or harassing account? See OSINT investigation of fake accounts.

What we do

What a lawful investigation covers

Preserve the evidence properly

Forensic copies of chats, emails, files and screenshots with hash values and a record of who handled them, so the evidence can be produced in court with the certificate that BSA S. 63 requires for electronic records.

Examine your own devices, with your consent

Your phone or laptop checked for spyware, stalkerware, malicious apps and signs of unauthorised access, using established forensic tools such as MVT. We examine only devices you own or are authorised to hand over.

Public-source (OSINT) research

What the suspect accounts, websites, domains, payment handles, public records and public blockchain entries reveal, and how they connect. Public sources only.

Map the money trail from your records

From your bank statements, UPI references, transaction IDs and the beneficiary details your app shows, we map where the money went and which banks must be written to and asked to act.

An investigation report that others can act on

A timeline linking each fact to its evidence and to the sections of law that apply, written for the investigating officer, a Magistrate or a civil court, with the specific information requests only they can make.

The legal route, handled by advocates

The complaint on cybercrime.gov.in, an FIR request under BNSS S. 173, escalation to the Superintendent of Police under BNSS S. 173(4), an application to the Magistrate under BNSS S. 175(3), legal notices, takedown requests and civil suits where they fit.

Where the law draws the line

What a private team cannot do, and who can

We work only with public-source information and evidence you are entitled to give us. Anyone who offers more than this, without the police or a court, is either breaking the law or not telling you the truth.

  • Hack back, or get into anyone's account, phone, email or server.

Unauthorised access is an offence under IT Act S. 43 read with S. 66, whatever the motive. We do not do it, and evidence obtained that way can damage your case.

  • Intercept calls, messages or internet traffic.

Interception is permitted only to government agencies authorised under IT Act S. 69.

  • Get the subscriber details, IP logs or call records behind an account or number.

Platforms and telecom operators give these to the police or to a court, for example on a BNSS S. 94 order. We draft the request and push for it; we cannot obtain the data ourselves.

  • Get the KYC or statement of the account that received your money.

Banks disclose another customer's records to the police or a court, not to a private team. We put the request in the hands of the officer who can make it.

  • Buy leaked databases, use paid 'lookup' bots, or pose as someone to extract information.

These methods are unlawful or unreliable, and they taint the evidence.

  • Register an FIR, arrest anyone or freeze an account.

Those are police and court powers. Offences under the IT Act are investigated by a police officer not below the rank of Inspector (IT Act S. 78).

We also do not promise to identify the person behind a crime or to recover money. We tell you, before you pay, what your case can realistically achieve.

How the case moves

How we work with the police, banks and platforms

Police and cyber cells

We give the investigating officer an organised evidence pack, the timeline and drafts of the notices that only the police can send to banks and platforms. If an FIR is refused, we take it to the Superintendent of Police and, if needed, to the Magistrate.

Banks

Dispute letters for your account, requests linked to your 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in complaint for action on the receiving accounts, and follow-up with the bank's nodal or grievance officer. The bank shares the receiving account's details with the police, not with us.

Platforms

Reports through the platform's own forms and its Grievance Officer under the IT Rules, 2021. For impersonation or morphed images of you, the platform must act within two hours of your complaint; other complaints must be resolved within seven days, with an appeal to the Grievance Appellate Committee within 30 days.

Courts

Where the police route stalls or the matter is civil, a court can be asked to order a platform to take content down and to disclose the subscriber information behind an account. We prepare the evidence those applications need.

How it works

From the first call to the case file

  1. A free first call

Message +91 8368 243183 on WhatsApp and tell us what happened. If money left your account in the last few hours, call 1930 first.

  2. Scope and quote

We tell you what can and cannot be found in your case, which route fits, and what it will cost. You decide before any paid work starts.

  3. Preserve the evidence

We secure chats, files, devices and records before they are deleted, overwritten or lost to short retention periods.

  4. Investigate

Device examination, public-source research and the money trail, run by cyber experts with an advocate on the same file.

  5. Report and file

You receive the investigation report, and we file or draft the complaint, the FIR request, the bank and platform letters, or the court application.

  6. Follow through

We follow up with the police, the bank and the platform, and escalate when they do not act.

Frequently asked

Questions before you start

Can a private investigator investigate a cyber crime in India?

A private team can gather and preserve evidence, examine your own devices with your consent, research public sources and prepare the case. It cannot use police powers: only the police can register an FIR, and only the police or a court can make a platform, telecom operator or bank disclose who is behind an account or a transaction. Offences under the IT Act are investigated by a police officer not below the rank of Inspector (IT Act S. 78). We do the first part and push the second through the proper channels.

Can you find out who is behind a fake account or a scam number?

Sometimes public sources connect an account to other profiles, websites or payment handles, and that can point to a person. Often they do not. The registration details are held by the platform or the telecom operator and are disclosed only to the police or a court. We tell you honestly what public sources show, and we take the request for disclosure to the people who can make it.

Can you trace the bank account that received my money?

We can map the trail from your own statements, UPI references and the beneficiary details your app shows, and write to the banks concerned. The receiving account's KYC and statement are disclosed by the bank to the police or a court, not to us. Report on 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in first, because a hold on money still in the system depends on speed.

Will you hack the scammer's phone or account?

No. Unauthorised access is an offence under IT Act S. 43 read with S. 66 even when the target is a criminal, and anything found that way can harm your case. Be wary of anyone who offers it.

Will you get my money back?

No one can guarantee that, and you should distrust anyone who does, especially people who contact you after a fraud offering 'recovery' for a fee. Recovery depends on how fast the fraud was reported, where the money went, the banks involved and often an order of a court.

Is the evidence you collect accepted in court?

We preserve electronic evidence with hash values and a handling record, and prepare it for the certificate that BSA S. 63 requires when electronic records are produced in court. Whether a court admits and relies on a piece of evidence is for the court to decide.

Do I still need to file a police complaint?

Usually, yes. The complaint is what lets the police use their powers to obtain records and act on accounts. An investigation makes the complaint stronger; it does not replace it. If you only need the complaint drafted, see our cyber crime complaint filing service.

How much does an investigation cost?

The first call is free. The cost depends on the case: how many devices, accounts and transactions are involved and which legal route fits. We give you a quote after the first call, before any paid work starts.

Do you take cases outside Delhi and Noida?

Yes. Most work is done remotely across India. Device examination can be done at our Delhi or Noida office by appointment, and where a matter needs a visit to a police station or court elsewhere, we tell you how we will handle it.
