Cyber insurance for individuals, or Cyber Surety by Codesnag and VirtualVakil?
Reviewed by the VirtualVakil legal team · Last reviewed:
Personal cyber insurance is a policy from an insurance company that pays for covered financial losses after you make a claim, subject to its terms, limits and exclusions. A cyber response membership such as Cyber Surety is not insurance: it gives you people who act during the incident, ethical hackers to secure your accounts and devices and lawyers to file and follow up the complaint. Which one fits depends on whether you want money after a loss, help while it is happening, or both.
How to choose, step by step
Decide what you need most
A payout after a covered loss, hands-on help in the first hours of an incident, or both. They solve different problems.
If you are buying a policy, read the wording
Check which losses are covered, the sub-limits and the deductible, the exclusions, and the claim conditions, such as whether a police complaint is required and within what time.
Check the seller
Insurance in India is sold by insurers registered with IRDAI, directly or through registered intermediaries. You can check an insurer on the IRDAI website.
If you are choosing a membership, test the first hour
Ask who answers, on which channel, at what hours, and whether they will draft and file the complaint and write to your bank, or only advise.
Compare the price with what you would actually use
Look at the monthly price, any joining fee, what the plan limits are and how cancellation and refunds work, on the plan page itself.
What personal cyber insurance usually is
Personal cyber insurance is a general insurance product. You pay a premium; if a loss covered by the policy happens, you file a claim and the insurer pays according to the policy terms. What is covered, and what is not, is set by the policy wording, so two policies with similar names can be very different. Read the definitions and exclusions before you buy.
What a cyber response membership is
Cyber Surety, from Codesnag × VirtualVakil, is a membership, not an insurance policy. When something goes wrong online, ethical hackers (Codesnag) and lawyers (VirtualVakil) respond 24×7 on WhatsApp to the same incident: the technical fix, the complaint to the police, bank or cyber cell, and the legal follow-up. Cyber-loss cover included, up to plan limits. T&C apply.
Personal and family plans run from ₹299 to ₹2,999 a month plus a one-time joining fee. Plans, limits and terms are on codesnag.ai/cyber-surety. Cyber Surety by Codesnag and VirtualVakil is not connected with any insurance product that has a similar name.
The difference in one line each
- Insurance: money after a covered loss, through a claim, on the policy's terms.
- Response membership: people who act during the incident, securing accounts, filing the complaint and following it up.
- The RBI rules on unauthorised transactions protect you only in the cases they cover and only if you report quickly; for transactions up to 31 December 2026 they generally do not cover a payment you approved yourself after being deceived. The new rules from 1 January 2027 go further, but compensation for a careless customer is limited to small losses and capped at ₹25,000 once in a lifetime.
